haven't bothered to update in a while because: 01) i'm lazy, 02) lack of good shows.
m83 at the fonda // november 29, 2008
wow, a crazy epic show. one of my favorites of the year. all the songs sounded dramatic and grandiose. this would've been a cool concert to bring a girlfriend to. i can't believe he's opening for the killers now. puke.
mstrkrft at the roxy // december 3, 2008
this show was announced at the last minute. i was originally planning on seeing sebastien tellier that night at the fonda. this was my 12th time in the past year seeing mstrkrft. nothing new, but always fun. earlier this year i posted about being plucked from the line of another mstrkrft show to be in their video for bounce. well, they finally released the video this week! one second of glory at the end. we're dressed as the bloody beetroots (the guys in the spiderman/venom masks).
MSTRKRFT - Bounce feat. N.O.R.E & Isis
oasis at the pearl, las vegas // december 6, 2008
drove up to vegas for the weekend solely for this. we decided to go to vegas to see them because seeing them at staples center here in l.a. would've been like trying to watch ants. the best seats go for hundreds of dollars but they're still far away from the stage. at the pearl, we got g.a. tix and were able to get within 20 feet from the stage which is pretty decent for a band of their stature. there was some douchebag with a bandana and a sequinned leather jacket next to me. he was all up on his girl, touching her face and...canoodling. he later turned to me and gave me one of his drinks which made me feel kind of guilty, haha. anyways, oasis played all their big hits from definitely maybe and whats the story, which was cool. they also played the masterplan! love that song.
the twelves at the dragonfly // december 9, 2008
does anyone know who these guys are? they're an electro pop duo from brazil and they make pretty good remixes. i think i drank a little too much at this show.
the cure at the troubadour // december 13, 2008
yes, the troubadour! ~400 person capacity! rumors had been circulating all week about them playing that saturday. i got it confirmed from multiple sources and kept watch the whole week for any official announcements. the rumor was that the show would be announced at midnight friday night and it was. turns out the cure show was the latest event for myspace secret shows. free, no less. i went to stake my place in line at 6am and ended up being the 11th person there. at about 10am, troubadour security said they'd give out bracelets to the first 150 people. i ended up getting a front row spot right in front of simon. he was so close that the neck of his bass was literally swinging a foot away from my head at times. robert smith was only a few feet away to my left. they ended up playing for about 2 1/2 hours. same old setlist from their tour earlier this year, but i can't really complain. they played 4-5 songs from the new album during their main set and broke out all the hits during their two encores. they played two of my favorite songs: push and one hundred years. after the show, everyone received a numbered poster of the show (out of 450) and a grab bag with the new album. yeah man, once in a lifetime experience.
and that's it this year. there are a ton of new year's eve shows but they all suck so hard. 85 shows this year. not a bad run. it was fun.

the concert log continues...
went with a few friends to see van she tech at vanguard a few weeks ago. i was nutting all over myself in anticipation for their set but they were a complete letdown. the only remix they played was feist's 1234. i was supposed to see ladyhawke the next day at the echo the next day but she had to cancel her u.s. tour due to visa troubles. another cock block...
last week, i went to see girl talk a couple of times. it's funny how the crowd has fully transitioned from the indie/hipster set for last year's two shows at echoplex to the frat/bro crowd for this year's two shows at the fonda. my brother was sooooooooo faded during the second show. my friend later told me he saw my brother in the lobby staring at some dude and his big bag of doritos for the longest time.
thursday - white lies at the roxy // i've only heard a few songs + 1 remix, but decided what the hell, i'll go see them. this was the best rock show i've been in to in a while. i guess you could say they're interpol-ish. they were impressive, i must say. every single song was good. at the end of the show, i got one of the roadies to give me a setlist and stole one of the posters. the crowd was stiff and lame save a few fans in the front.
i heard there was supposed to be an ed banger secret guest spinning at the heist in hollywood so we drove by after the white lies show to see if we could find out who it was. the front and side of the club was ridiculously packed and overflowing with mexican hoochies and i heard that multiple fights broke out outside. on friday, word got around that the special guest was daft punk! there were a few grainy pics and youtube videos circulating to support this. i'll come back to this topic in a bit...
friday - hard haunted mansion at shrine expo hall // my god, this was possibly the greatest collection of electro artists in one place. justice, soulwax, boys noize, deadmau5, crystal castles, simian mobile disco, sebastiAn, 2 many dj's, and "special guests". to my knowledge, the only festival with a better electro line up was the i <3 techno fest in ghent, belgium last year. tickets sold out the saturday before hard and i didn't have any because i had my thumb up my ass and i couldn't be bothered. i checked ebay. nothing. i checked craigslist and all i found were requests for tickets from other desperate fans. tickets listings started appearing the next day. people were selling them for $150 - $400 each. i had to bite the bullet and buy a pair for $300. soulwax or die.
with the talk of daft punk at the heist the night before, many people assumed one of the secret guests would be daft punk. as it turns out, one of the members of daft punk did appear for a performance. 50 min into the set, he took off his helmet revealing himself to be dj am. so lame, i'm glad i didn't bother to check it out.
during the justice set, i ran into my doppleganger. i knew he'd come to hard, but i didn't think i'd run into him in the midde of 10,000+ people. i recognize him, and he recognizes me, so it's become rather uncomfortable when we run into each other. at the time, there was no way i could kill him to restore balance to the universe because i didn't have my shank with me. i would've been caught during the pat-down upon entry had i tried to bring it with me. he was dressed as a giant chili pepper. that was probably a strategic move. the padding would've softened my blows had we gotten into a fight.
we left around 3:30am which means somone had about a six hour window steal my ipod from my car. fucking bastards. all that good music in the hands of some dip shit candy raver thief. such a shame. on saturday i went to fry's and bought a 120 gig silver iPod and it took me over an hour to load all music from my external drive. i'm still missing about 200-300 songs i downloaded this month. what kills me is that i lost all my play counts and playlists. at least i have some of my listening history on my last.fm page. the shitty thing about my listening history there is that it's only for the past year. it looks like i don't listen to anything aside from electro.
saturday - eric prydz at avalon // over the past year prydz and soulwax were the two acts i've anticipated seeing the most. soulwax delivered and prydz turned out to be another disappointment. this guy makes some of the best tracks and it kills me that he barely plays any of them in his sets. he only played f12 that night. another thing i hate is going to avalon. they only sell half the tickets online so they can sell the other half the day of which ensures that most everyone doesn't know who the hell he dj is. the dance floor is also filled with fobby couples in their 40's high on some drug or other. i gave up seeing yelle down the block at the fonda for all this. i tried selling my tickets to a coworker, but in the end i couldn't even give my tickets away to any of my friends who knew who she was.
sunday - dj falcon, jfk (of mstrkrft), busy p, so me at lax // dj falcon was billed as the headliner that night with another "special guest" teaser. the guests turned out to be jfk from mstrkrft and busy p, fresh off their shows in vegas the night before. jfk actually came on to play a few songs and busy p closed. this was the most fun i've had at lax. a few months ago, we met some people while waiting in line for 2 many dj's. they turned out to be pretty cool people so we ended meeting up at cinespace, lax, and vanguard for other electro shows. one of them is a geeky music nut like me and we took the first step in our budding bromance by going out to lax together for this show because all our friends bailed on us. oh yeah, we saw my doppleganger at lax too.
monday - the last shadow puppets at the mayan theatre // they brought the orchestra with them to duplicate the sound from the album. i wonder how much it costs to bring that many people along. they did a pretty cool cover of, "i want you (she's so heavy)". i hear they're working on another album so i suppose the next arctic monkeys album isn't coming out for a while.

oh man, i'm officially burned out. went to a show almost every day for the past 2 1/2 weeks. i wanted to go see dj mehdi last night at lax, but i couldn't muster the energy to see which friends wanted to go. it's much more taxing finding someone to go with than it is actually going to a show. i go out too much and burn out all my friends who can't handle shows + boozing it up more than a couple of nights a week. ha, that doesn't sound good but like i always tell my friends, i'm not an alkee--i only like to drink when i'm at shows. i'll have 4 - 10 drinks depending how danceable/fun the music is. haha, am i in denial? i'm only buzzed/almost buzzed most of the time and i have ZERO interest in drinking outside of shows. it's boring as hell to sit at a bar and drink and i don't drink at home.
so continuing from last week...
sunday - mstrkrft at the el rey // see last post
tuesday - mstrkrft at the glasshouse // total sausage fest, but it was fun. they did a second encore, playing for nearly two hours altogether. it's hilarious how open everyone is walking around the parking lots and streets drinking and smoking weed. we stay in my car.
wednesday - my bloody valentine at santa monica civic auditorium // i hate this venue. it sounds so boomy. they lived up to their legendary status and DROWNED out everyone in a continuous wall of sound. good thing they were giving out ear plugs in the lobby
thursday - my bloody valentine
friday - the presets and cut copy at the glasshouse // i love seeing these bands. cut copy's music is so happy and they look like they're enjoying themselves onstage. of the reviews i've read, the presets trumped cut copy both nights.
saturday - l.a. detour // saw presets and cut copy again. followed them up with the bloody beetroots who played on top of the stairs at the courtyard of city hall. sweet deal
saturday - cut copy and presets afterparty at some warehouse // after catching the beetroots, we went to this afterparty. i don't think even half the people went to detour. the presets and cut copy came on around midnight and they took turns spinning which was pretty cool. i got to high five the lead singer of both bands when each came down to the floor to dance while the other was spinning. as you can guess, all the girls made a beeline to cut copy dude.
did i ever mention i have a concert doppleganger/bizarro? he's also asian and i see him at almost every show i go to which leads me to believe that he goes to waaaay more shows than me. i see him in party pictures and random people's flicker albums. just this week, i saw him at one of the my bloody valentine shows and the detour afterparty. maybe i'm supposed to kill him to restore balance to the universe. or maybe i'm supposed to befriend him and we'll be the founding members of the justice league of concert-goers. i don't know, i'm leaning towards killing him.

i had the most bizarre week. random make outs, getting into fights (haven't been in a fight since 4th grade), one girl i'm making out with getting into a fight (i don't know when her last fight was).
sunday - goldfrapp at the orpheum // this was hands down the best concert i've been to in a while. i can't believe her voice sounds the way it does live.
sunday - does it offend you yeah? at lax // disappointing dj set and crowd
monday - css at the mayan // lovefoxx is getting kind of tubby. i wouldn't say anything if she covered up, but she invites these sorts of criticisms when she wears spandex body suits
tuesday - css at the mayan // yeah, confirmed it.
wednesday - css at the glasshouse // this show had the best crowd. how does the glasshouse make money if they don't serve alcohol?
friday - mstrkrft at the fonda // i love mstrkrft but the quality of their remixes is going downhill. i'm surprised they still play one more time, but i'll take it!
saturday - mstrkrft at the san diego house of blues // yep, the girls are cuter down here. this was the craziest night of the week. backtrack a little bit: when i was down in sd a couple of months ago for the crystal castles show at the casbah, i met a girl and danced with her the entire time. i got her number at the end of the night and never called her. i sort of bumped into her at this show hahahaha.
sunday - mstrkrft at the el rey // half empty venue, but still loads of fun.

hehe, i got to meet justice on friday after their show in san diego! i found sound engineer dude right before justice started their set and he said i should come hang out with him and justice after the show and have some drinks. sound engineer dude has invited me about 3-4 other times to come hang out after their shows, but for various reasons i couldn't. when i was in the trailer with gaspard and xaviar, i was trying not to have that dumb look of awe on my face. yeah, i'm gloating, but where the hell else am i going to talk about this???
when we were hanging out at the soundboard before the show, sound engineer dude told me he's going to meet up with daft punk early next year to work on the new daft punk album. can you believe this guy? i have no doubt he's uber-talented, but how does a guy luck out and work with two of the biggest names in electronic dance music?
as for the actual justice show, it's getting a tad boring. this is probably because: 1) they only have 1 album + a few remixes incorporated into their set, 2) i've seen them too many times. nine shows since october, i think? i need to lay down the pipe. no but really, i had an awesome time. i am relieved though that their headlining slot at hard haunted mansion this halloween is only a dj set. i know i won't be missing much when i catch soulwax headlining another stage during the same slot. they're on the top of my list of bands to see right now. i think my list of most anticipated musical acts (that i haven't seen before) would be something like this:
01 soulwax at hard
02 van she / van she tech at vanguard// vst are coming next month!
03 eric prydz at avalon // next month
04 lifelike
05 ladyhawke at the echo // seeing her next month too. $8 tickets, what a ridiculous price. drinks at these shows are more than $8.
06 m83 at the fonda // next month
07 late of the pier
08 mercy arms
over the past couple of weeks, i managed to see danger a couple of times, midnight juggernauts, and deadmau5. the first danger show at lax had the shittiest l.a.-cooler-than-thou-"oh-who's-playing-tonight?" crowd i've ever seen. why the hell are you going to wait over half an hour outside just so you can come in to smoke in the patio? i don't get it.
